What Do You Live For?

“If you want to identify me, ask me not where I live, or what I like to eat, or how I comb my hair, but ask me what I am living for, in detail, and ask me what I think is keeping me from living fully for the thing I want to live for.”

Thomas Merton

I keep a framed copy of an essay by Oriah Mountain Dreamer in my office. It begins with some similar words and both authors express something about our longing for a more meaningful life experience.

This is a quote I recommend reading more than once. Or post it a place where you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on it daily.

What do you live for? What stops you? Share with all of us by clicking on "comments" below.

With love and respect,

Robert

A seriously challenging question.

How do you answer it?

Michael,

A very personal answer -- not a suggestion for others, just for me:

At the "doing" level, I live to contribute, to myself, my family and in my work. At the "being" level, I live to grow closer to God.

I learned this from my dog.

ALL ABOUT LIFE

Sometimes I wonder how much of life passes by while we’s waitin’ for somethin’ t’happen.

We human bein’s are always waitin’ fer somethin’…the mail, t’git paid fer workin’, a phone call, a “attaboy”, our ship t’come in. It’s always somethin’.

But ole yella dog, he’s a doer. He’ll wait fer the gopher fer a spell, then he’ll dig fer it. He’ll wait fer a biskit, fer ‘bout a minute, then I get’s a nudge. He’ll wait fer the snail t’move… well, that’s the excepshun. I think he does that jus’ t’relax.

Human bein’s maybe otta take a lesson or 2 ‘bout waitin’ and doin’. Ya can wait and think fer a minute but then ya gotta do.

That dog don’t always git what he’s after, but he always trys. An’ at the end of every day, He gits a real good scratchin’ fer tryin’.
